Dave Cavanagh began repairing stringed musical instruments in 1964. He acquired his mechanical skills from his father, a Master Mechanic and Flight Engineer for Pan American Airways. From the time Dave was a small child, his father taught him to use all the tools in his extensive machine shop.
Dave built his first musical instrument in high school: an extensively inlaid five string banjo used professionally for many years by Sarah Elizabeth Campbell. He is currently producing solid-body electric ukuleles for fun and profit!
In 1972, while still in high school Dave landed a job as a professional instrument repairman at the local music store, Cole Music, in his hometown of Sonoma, California. He eventually purchased the store and independently owned and operated it for 11 years before retiring from the retail music business in 1996.
Dave understands the needs of professional musicians because he is a performer himself. Playing stages since he was 16, he has toured with Randy Sparks in the Back Porch Majority, and accompanied Burl Ives during his final performances. Dave was also a founding member of many bands including Fiddlestix, The Untamed Cowlicks, and for the last 12 years, Doodoo Wah.
To quote John Green, Fifth String owner, "I trust Dave to do all the work on my personal instruments".
